0.1 microns refers to the size of the particles that the Avari will capture from the air. Those tiny particles like dust, pollen, mold, viruses, and bacteria will not pass through the filter. Some Avari air purifiers actively sterilize particles with Violet-Blue LED light, while other models hold particles against the filter via electrostatic charge until the particles dehydrate and die. The lifespan of living particles such as viruses and bacteria ranges between a few hours to a few weeks. Yes both the 500/525 and the 600 filter mold spores. Spores tend to range between 3-100 microns and Avari's patented ESF filter captures particles as small as 0.1 microns.

MERV testing is primarily used for HVAC systems. The highest MERV tests for particles from 3.0 micron to 0.3 microns. Avari filters down to PM 0.1 micron. So its design to micro filter for smaller personal spaces, not big rooms. Only the blue light at the bottom of the Avari 600 can be turned off. The 500/525 have indicator lights that cannot be turned off. We recommend covering the light with tape or paper if you require a dark room.
